Poodle -
Breed Groom Profile

Poodles of any size, present a challenge to any new parent.  Because a poodle will spend a significant part of their lives in a grooming salon, the sooner you can begin having him groomed the better!  While the fluffy fuzzy poodle puppy coat is just too cute, it needs to be taken down rather short at least three times within the first year, to allow the firm characteristic adult coat to develop properly.  He may look a little funny at first, but in the long run, you’ll be glad you did!

A wide variety of clips are available, however all clips are not always compatible to all types of coat. A scissored lamb clip may look simply wonderful on your neighbors' dog, but may look choppy and uneven on yours due to the different textures and qualities of coat. Groomers are experienced with all types of coat and can recommend what type of clip will be best for your pup!

Poodles should be groomed every 4-8 weeks, depending on the clip you choose.

Poodle fun facts:

  • Poodles originated in Germany, not France.

  • They were originally bred as hunting dogs, specifically water retrievers.

  • Poodles have hair, not fur. Fur grows up to a certain point and then falls off or 'sheds'. Hair does not fall out and never stops growing.  This is not to say that poodles don't shed at all, it's just that the coat that does shed or break,  needs to be brushed out so as not to go on to become matting.
